During the time of our ownership, Atherotech, Inc., based in Birmingham, AL, was a medical diagnostic company focused on developing a comprehensive line of cardio diagnostic products utilizing the company's proprietary Vertical Auto Profile Test technology. The company's first product, the VAP Cholesterol Test, was available through national and regional diagnostic laboratories and was positioned as a new standard of care for patients at risk of cardiovascular disease. At a price comparable to the routine lipid panel, the VAP test provided direct, detailed measurements of cholesterol, or lipid, subclasses that play an important role in the development of cardiovascular disease, the No. 1 cause of death in the United States.
